Stop privatisation; improve existing and build a new generation of first class council housing
Housing and Benefit campaigns build 13 June Summit
Government threats to tenants, housing and benefits, are bringing campaigners together at a Tenants and Housing summit in London. The Summit will focus on effective action to resist the soaring evictions and benefit cuts, and step up pressure for rent control and the new council housing we need. Groups attending include Greater Manchester Anti Bedroom Tax campaigners gearing back up for action. They are co-ordinating a 25 June protest when the new Housing Minister speaks in Manchester- details here. Tenants fighting demolition at Fred Wigg and John Walsh Towers, in Tottenham and on many other estates, will be at the summit to share plans for resisting loss of homes.
Trade union campaigners including young GMB members in London, teachers and Unite Community members will be at the Summit; among those organising the new generation stuck with huge rents and no rights as private tenants. The 'summit' on 13 June 11-4.30pm is at Bloomsbury Baptist Church Hall in central London. Called by Defend Council Housing, it is supported by Housing Justice ,and Generation Rent, Unite, NUT Teachers and other trade unions and Disabled People Against Cuts. Welsh Tenants, estates fighting demolition and privatisation, Greater Manchester and other Anti Bedroom Tax and benefits campaigns and the Radical Housing Network are among others taking part.
